When is it time to consider hospice?
Hospice should be considered before a medical crisis occurs — not just during the final days of life. Early referrals give patients and families the opportunity to benefit from expert symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, education, and individualized care planning — often resulting in improved quality of life and fewer unnecessary hospitalizations.
Consider referring when you notice
Frequent hospitalizations or emergency department visits
Progressive decline despite medical treatment
Increasing dependence with activities of daily living
Unintentional weight loss, weakness, or decreased functional status
Uncontrolled pain or worsening symptoms
A patient or family expressing a desire to focus on comfort, dignity, and quality of life
A prognosis suggesting a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness follows its normal course — as certified by a physician
Hospice is about living as comfortably and meaningfully as possible. The earlier patients receive hospice services, the more they and their families can benefit from the comprehensive support of an interdisciplinary care team.
